we flew on u.s. airways going from PA to FL (disney) in august of this year with our two daughters who were 4 and 6 at the time, they needed birth certificates and we as the adults needed to be listed on their birth certificates, which we were. if you have a young child, allow them to take a stuffed animal or other memento from home to cuddle with on the plane trip. if you are flying out of the country, you will have passport issues of some sort but i am not sure of what they are.
hope you're asking this question for a trip of pleasure, vacations rock!!!

Bring the child's birth certificate or get them a passport if traveling outside the country.

That probably depends most on where you are traveling to and from.
