There are three possible causes for a crater:
- Volcanic activity
- Meteor impacts
- Explosions (from, for example, a bomb)
Earth's moon has never been bombed, and doesn't have volcanoes. Is that enough help?

Meteors hitting it. Remember, the moon does not have a thick atmosphere like ours. The earth's atmosphere burns up most large space debris to such a small size that it doesn't usually affect us when it reaches the ground. The moon however, does not have a thick atmosphere so it is constantly being struck by meteors.

craters are made by meteors crashing into the moons surface and because the moon does not have any life or water it can not repair its self.Erosion and insects help Earth repair ancient meteorite sites that is why you can not see them.
