Michelangelo was the first superstar of art and of course a Renaissance Man. Although his first love was sculpturing he painted some of the worlds most famous Frescoes....the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and "The Last Judgment" which fills the entire wall behind the altar at the Sistine Chapel. He was a contemporary of DaVinci and Raphael. Leonardo and Michelangelo where, may we say, not the best of friends. His sculpture of the "Pieta" is often sited as his best work for the true human like detail of a dead Jesus laying in Mary's lap. Michelangelo like Leonardo did study the human body through autopsies and many believe this is where he developed such great detail of the human body. His fourteen foot portrayal of 'David' looks as though "David" is ready to respond to your questions. Michelangelo was a very religious man and a dedicated family man. When his father was in financial trouble Michelangelo sent him his entire commission of 500 ducets which he was paid for his work on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo would tell people that each piece of marble or stone had a figure trapped within and he only freed the personage from the confinement. I could write all day, but Michelangelo was a superstar during his time and still is...he died a very wealthy man.
