South Carolina. Upset with Lincoln's election in November, South Carolina (always the most nervous about losing slavery) led the secession movement by pulling out of the Union in December, 1860. Six other states joined them to form the Confederacy, and after Ft. Sumter was attacked in April of 1861, four more states joined the Confederacy.
