A friend and I are working on something for a school assignment, but her computer needed a printer, so she got the stuff and hooked it all up correctly, and a window popped up on the computer saying that new hardware had been added and she needed to go through a hardware wizard to make it work. So she did. But apparently she wasn't supposed to? Because now nothing works. It will not allow her to install the printer and it won't recognize a printer is there. This is assignment is time-sensitive, please help!

Go to the Printer Manufacturers Home page and download the driver for the printer onto the PC. Delete the one that was automatically installed first via Control Panel in Windows. After it installs properly do a print test page and a test document. If a problem persists do a scan disk on the computer and delete any or all tmp files associated.

All my printers came with good setup instructions. Didn't your friend's? If memory serves, they all told how to assemble the printer and put in the ink cartridges, but not to plug the printer in until the driver had been loaded and a dialog box advised.

Suggest you uninstall, turn the PC off. I would go so far as to turn off power at the switch to totally clear memory, then reinstall.

check the printer folder. if the printer has an icon, right click and delete.
then, before connecting the usb cable this time, use the install disk that came with the printer and install the drivers. at some point, the prompt to connect the cable will popup.
connect cable, and let install finish.
should work.

Does her printer have software? If so, install it. If she doesn't have software and her printer is an HP, go to www.hp.com and enter her model number and download a driver. Just ignore the stupid hardware "wizard."
