I personally like this definition from UrbanDictionary.com (pay particular attention to the last paragraph):
"Emo" is not short for "Emotional." "Emo" does not mean Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional, despite what MTV has lead you to believe in the last few years. "Emo" is not sidebangs, tight pants, and male vocalists who sing like little girls about their failed relationships. "Emo" is not the use of diluted, meaningless metaphors and similes such as "My arms are like pinecones," and most definitely is not the rampant use of words such as "autumn," "heart," "knife," "bleeding," "leaves," and "razorblade."
I just thought I'd clear that up after all of these "definitions" in which I have encountered an unbelievable amount of people who try to pass off their blatantly false pretenses as fact, and are slowly infecting others with their high-horse, holier-than-thou bullshit. Because honestly, with your ridiculous definitions, Beethoven, George Gershwin, and Britney Spears are/was "emo bands."
Now, onto the real definition.
In the early 90s there was a movement in the hardcore genre that came to be known as "Emotive Hardcore," spearheaded by Rites Of Spring. Harder-core-than-thou kids, who swore by Dischord Records a la Minor Threat, actually coined the term "Emo" as something of a put-down for the kids who really liked Rites Of Spring, Indian Summer and this new wave of "Emotive" Hardcore bands. That's right, "Emo" was once not something kids called themselves. The field exploded outwards from there - Level-Plane Records has always been the most famous Emo label. Acts like Yaphet Kotto, I Hate Myself, Saetia, Hot Cross, A Day In Black And White, Funeral Diner, I Would Set Myself On Fire For You, You And I, and hosts of others came in the next decade. Most emo bands have since broken up, but there's still the occasional hold-out (again, the majority of Level-Plane Records' roster has been a procession of emo acts). Like most DIY hardcore/punk of the time, a majority found its way onto vinyl and not much else. Some people consider bands like Fugazi, and later Sunny Day Real Estate, a progression of emo, but personally, I don't quite follow that philosophy.
Often, more recently, this gets intertwined with post-hardcore, and understandably so - that's nothing to make an issue of, since well ****, at least it's close.
Since the late 90s, though, bands have been emerging in the vein of Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, and the thousands of their clones. As far as I can tell, some lazy journalist somewhere, writing an article about them, decided "Well, ****, no one knows what emo is anyways, so I'll call these bands "emo" - sounds more appealing than bubblegum pop rock..." and the spiral continued downwards into the current amalgomation of bands MTV has told everyone is "emo."
Somehow, people decided that "emo" meant "emotional," which is obviously bullshit, as 99% of bands make music to illicit emotion, which would make "emotional" a completely all-encompassing genre from classical to opera to pop to rap.
-----------------------------------
But if that isn't quite cutting it for you, you have plenty of other answers here with the stereotypical definitions....

AN EMO KID
Okay first lets understand the term EMO and the context it is used so we can identify what emo kid is CONCRETELY. I m using pure logic and reasoning so if there is any flaws please argue and state your point clearly and concisely.
Emo meaning emotional, can be used to describe a person who expresses themselves. Be it through, art, music, clothing, behavior, ect. Emotions are states of mind and often emotions alter our perception, behavior, thoughts, feelings, judgment ect..
So its not a good idea to always stay in one emotion because this can effect your life.
An emo kid is one who expresses themself totally and completely. It is a total self expression that is misunderstood by society.
The reason its misunderstood as sad and depressed people is because of the growth of popularity, the media, the music industry. All these factors play a roll in the perception of an emo kid.
The definition i gave is very general.
A specific one would be.
An emo kid is one who lashes out in rage.

Emo reall is a sereotipical word, most people use it to call someone a sad goth-ish type of person who is into punk and often depressed and feels they need to hurt themselves. Really, it is just a person who listens to a certain kind of music. Though it is mostly used negatively, all of the newer bands (Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, AFI) have an "emo" style with black eyeliner and dark lyrics. So in ways emo is cool, in others it is bad. Be what you want. I like AFI. I own Converse. I hate life. I've slit my wrists. I shop at Hot Topic. Does this make me emo?
Honestly, I don't care. So to answer your question, emo is whatever you think it is. And most emo guys ARE hot. Like I said, emo is just another stereotype. Screw it.

EMO is short for emotional.
EMO is a subculture and it has existed for a lot longer than you think. It's been underground for a while but in recent years it's turned into skinny jeans and bad music. Ok fine, not all of it is bad but the worst I've heard is "So I'll cut my wrists and black my eyes so I can sleep at night" --_-- Hawthorne Heights
Basically, mostly anyone who is wearing skinny jeans and has their hair covering their eyes is considered an emo kid. Go to myspace or other online blogs and find a pic with a profile picture with a depressed face, hair over eyes and a lot of times with a subtitle of "You rip apart my soul but I still love you". Stereotypically emo boys make out with other emo boys and emo girls consider that hot apparently(?) Emo kids are very much in tune with their emotions and seem to exaggerate them, therefore seeming VERY sensitive. Which could explain why they're always crying. However since their hair is always covering their eyes, I believe they're depressed because they can't see ;)
Emo is pretty bashed among everyone else. I've noticed that it's something that other groups (preps, goths, druggies or whatever) have come together to bash. No one, except other emo kids, likes emo kids.

Emo is short for emotional.
Emo is a broad title that covers a lot of different styles of emotionally-charged punk rock.
Emo is a slang term used to describe a range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music and its related scene. As an adjective, emo can describe a style of fashion or music; or a general state of unhappiness or melancholy (as in "to feel emo"). Emo is also used as a noun, often pejoratively, to identify a member of the "emo scene" or someone viewed as fitting the "emo" stereotype.
The term emo was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and strongly emotional during performances.
I am guessing that they cry because they get so emotional?

Well , it used to be about a type of music, but so much has gone on and so many artists being accused of being "Emo" , to cut through all that stuff , it's easier to say it's become more about fashion than anything else, and for that you could try typing the word in at wikipedia, though the disclaimer at the top page indicates that the wikipedia info is being challenged , so i suppose "whining" is part of being Emo. LOL!

they are emo because they want attention. they like that people make fun of them. they want to look like a bunch of "queers" wearing their girls pants WANTING to get their @$$ kicked. they want a reason to cut themselves and write a song. i remember when hot topic was always empty because people didnt like anything in their. and by that i mean ROCK/METAL/REAL PUNK/GRUNGE. but now its all emo music and crowded with emo kids... *sigh* lets just send them to iraq, win or lose... USA is still the winner with less emo queers
