However, if you are looking for an example of a successful resistance against European colonization by an African nation in the 19th century, look at Ethiopia. Under Menelik II Ethiopia defeated Italy in 1896, and maintained their independence until 1936 when the Italians attacked again (without declaring war, and with a staggering military advantage due to modern technology...i.e. mustard gas) and overran the country until the country was liberated by a joint British and Ethiopian force in 1941.
