i believe that pyschiatry is a better source for treating the mind. because the patient could have chemical imbalancements and the only way for treatment would be through pills unless the patient has rational will power of understanding their problem and learning how to control it. which is rare in a case where medication would be recommended.

They both have advantages...

The significant difference is the ability to provide medications (psychiatry).

Some believe that Psychiatry is better because of this ability, however, this is not the case.

Psychologists have direct access to referral for psychiatrists if the assessment includes the potential need for meds.

Typically, Psychiatrists are swamped in providing medications, and may become used to meds as the primary course of treatment. In this case, you may end up taking medications when alternate non medication treatment will work.

The Hippocratic oath for mental health professionals states: Do no harm, and use the least evasive method to solve the problem.

I would recommend seeing a Licensed Psychologist over a Psychiatrist due to the course of treatment. If you need medications included in treatment, they will be provided through referrals.

Also, it will be much easier to get an appointment with a Psychologist, and is usually cheaper in cost per hour.

Another option is to see a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who can provide you with psychotherapy treatment. This will also include medication referrals if assessed and will coordinate the treatment with prescribed medications if need be.

Good luck, and remember, your quality of life is the most important aspect, and you deserve the highest quality of life possible. Make sure to assess and reassess the service provided and don't put up the anything less that professional treatment.

They both have their advantages, but Western medicine is quite mistaken that the mind and body deserve separate interventions. In Eastern medicine, there is no mind/body split and treatments are holistic (whole person). that's wahts better than psychology or psychiatry. But I am currently studyign to be a psychologist, and would like to someday pursue an M.D. as well

Psychology is better for behavior modification.
Psychiatry is more for organic illness to the brain. This answer is extremely general. However for example: A psychotherapist can treat depression & general symptoms with therapy and with drugs in conjunction with a M.D. The Psyciatrist is more for symptoms resistant to therapies associated with a psychologist, whom may refer to a psyciatrist for additional medical treatmet. An M.D. might also refer to a shrink for a more effective use of drugs,
