Check out Stephen's answer, he's right. Left handers have a great advantage because it's the left hand that does all the hard work. No need to muck about with the strings, especially if you're starting from scratch -- get a good teacher.

For the most part your strong hand should be picking the guitar no doubt. Your picking hand controls all kinds of sounds like open to muted or screaming lead work as well as how clean and tight the riff will sound in general. I would not say it is easier to pick a guitar at all. Both are difficult done right and experienced players are very skilled clean and tight pickers for sure. I think you should go with a lefty guitar if you are a lefty. This means picking with your left hand. I am right handed and pick with my right hand naturally. But my brother is a lefty and plays right hand picking only because he did not know there was a choice when we were kids so he just learned right handed not knowing any better. hope ths helps, peace

If you are a lefty you don't have to switch strings around on a regular guitar. You can simply buy a guitar made specificaly for left handed people. The biggest maker of left handed guitars in my opinion is Fender.

If you need to get started it is imperative that you get a guitar teacher that has been recomended by a couple people. But if you don't want to get a teacher; learn how to read tablature and just start playing along with your favorite music.

P.S. Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain were left handed guitarist, so you tell me if left handed people can play guitar.

First, get a guitar. Next, get lessons. Next, Jimi Hendrix was left handed and he played a regular right handed guitar, so yes this is possible. He played it strung as a right handed guitar. He just learned to play it left handed.

Absolutely rubbish Soxfan. A left handed person doesn't have to switch strings around. I'm left handed and didn't.

I taught myself the guitar although, I had piano and violin lessons as a boy. The easiest way to get started is to find someone else who can play and get them to show you a few things. Obviously a proper teacher is the ideal thing. For me it was the former.

maybe you can start by using beginner books which show you how to correctly place your fingers when playing chords and it will show you how to tune the guitar. Like someone said, you can play a regular guitar, but the strings will have to be reversed.

jimi hendrix seemed to manage it. you just put the strings in the reverse order so as the player looks down at the instrument the thinnest string is at the top.
