depends on the kind of ink... in powder form, it will sometimes stick to the sides of the cartridge because of static electricity... just give it a little tap. Some cartridges can be rocked back and forth to get another 100 pages of print from them.. I guess I should have read the rest of the question 'cause you need to probably put it back in the box between uses... or put the protective cover back on to keep it from evaporating.

I had been away cruising on my yacht. When I got home my printer worked for a short time and then seemed to run out of ink. I bought a new cartridge and now it won't print colour only B&W.
It seems the print head could be at fault. I have tried cleaning it using the software many times with no luck.
I guess the print head just clogged while not being used

Some companies are now incorporating an expiration date on their ink cartrideges which means even if the cartridge isn't empty your printer will refuse to run untill the cartridge is changed. Sad but true.

As the cartridge is sealed it isn't going to make any difference on whether you leave it in the printer or take it out. There isn't anything you can really do to make it last longer.

If you really print that infrequently you should clean the print head each time use the printer. This will clear the heads so there is not as much ink left on the head to dry out.

The cleaning process can be usally be found by right clicking on the printer icon and clicking on printer properties. If it's not found here check the web for instructions for your specific printer by googling the name and model.

Some ink cartridges come with little blocks that seal off the printhead - if yours did and you really print that infrequently, try pulling them out and sticking the protectors back on them. Otherwise if its been a long time, sometimes you can resurrect them by gently cleaning off the printhead with some rubbing alcohol to get all the gummed-up ink off.
