Why are manufacturers packaging their products in plastic, hard-shell containers (a real pain to open)?

I think it deters theft by making it impossible to sneak an item out of its packaging and into your pocket.

Its to protect against shop lifting. They can embed the security chips inside and they cannot be taken out. Its too bad really because so much useless packaging is ruining our planet. There should be a law.
