Let total no of candies she started with = x
Wasted = 2/5 * x
Left = x- 2/5 x
= 3/5 x
Divide that into 3 groups = 1/3 * 3/5x
= 3/15 x
After 1 group is eaten , left over = 3/5x - 3/15x
=6 / 15x
6/15x = 5
x = 5*15/6
= 12.5
Which should be ~13

After eating 1 group, she had 2 groups left. They totaled 5 candies. that would mean 2 1/2 candies per group. I think there is an error here. There should have been an even number left.

2 1/2 candies/group*3groups=7 1/2 candies which was 3/5 of the original total
7.5/.6=12.5 candies to start with.
5 got wet. She ate 2 1/2 leaving 5

Let's make it into an equation...

Let's let C = number of candies:

since she threw away 2/5, she was left with 3/5

then she divided the candies into 3 groups and ate 1, so she had 2/3 left...

C * 3/5 * 2/3 = 5

6/15 C = 2/5 C = 5

2C = 25

C = 12.5 pieces
