You don't mention what model or year you're working with, but some of the earlier Yamie 4x4 Big Bear and Wolverine models had a reverse switch that could break wires, and keep the engine from allowing neutral or forward gear selection.

If this is the problem, you will be able to physically shift the engine to neutral while the ignition is shut off, but not while it's running.

If this isn't your model, or the problem happens when it's running or not, then you may have a transmission problem. Try having someone stand behind the quad and gently rock it back and forth while you try and engage neutral. If this doesn't work, or the shift feels like it's not even trying to engage, then it's an internal problem.

If the quad will shift into neutral when it's not running, it's probably a clutch or belt issue.

Like the first answer said. Youhave to move around to find the gear that is may be locked into...this rocking motion free's up the gears (or wiggles) them and allows the bike to drop back into neutral...my ol sportster never liked going into neutral for some reason...it was real touchy and would go from 1st to 2nd gear and skip over neutral alot.
