I have been wanting to perform for as long as I can remember. I've been playing the violin since I was 9 and the guitar since i was about 11 or so. I'm now 16, and I am seriously considering playing in an orchestra to make my living. I'm in one now, for kids my age, but I want to take it farther. So does anyone have an estimate of how much I will make?

I agree with what everyone eles said it depends on how good you are and how famous you may become. Seeing as your well experienced with the instuments, all you have to do now is get someone to hear you play. someone that can help you out

It varies a LOT! I've worked as a studio musician and made a good living but am by no means rich. If you play in an orchestra you will be paid according to the prestige of that particular orchestra. If you are good enough to be granted an audition consider yourself lucky. Most top-notch orchestra positions have several people audition and are by invitation only. Start small, making little, and work your way up. The better you get the more opportunities you will have.

If you attend college - depending on which college you could to and which orchestra you become a part of then you can make starting out $28,000 - $35,000 a year. Of course it increases substantially with talent. Most musicians have other projects that supplement their incomes from side gigs, sessions, teaching etc.

And for the guy that says Aerosmith makes $38k a gig - that's absolutely wrong. Try $250,000 - $400,000 for this last run with Motley Crue on average.

Phone your local Musician's Union, and ask what the rates are. Unfortunately, a lot of gigs don't want to know about union rates, so you take what you can get. Join a band and try to get your face in, once you've done that, you may be noticed by a session fixer. It's very hard to make a living out of full time playing these days -- but you never know until you try.

I just read that Aerosmith as a band pulls in 38k per show. I don't care what they make, because they deserve it for being around and rockin so long (35+years), however nor do I really know if it was accurate either. But thats an after-cost's estimate it said.

I am a professional musician that makes $0 doing it.

I gamble at the casinos to make up for that.

Plus my regular job helps.

Well it all depends on if you become famous or not.

Good luck sweety!

(work really hard, it depends on what type of work you do too for example background music for movies or songs etc etc.)
