Neither - it makes me angry. Why do Fletcher and Flintoff continue to make incomprehensible decisions... We drop Read after a couple of tests where he kept wicket immaculately and out batted Jones on the strength of his one day form in one tournament - never mind Jones' appalling run of failures spanning a year or more.
Now when confronted with a slow pitch that traditionally turns we decide not to deploy Monty. We still would have had three quick bowlers in the side - it's not like we were going to be short. Presumably they're thinking there's going to be some movement - there's going to have to be a f*ck of a lot to justify this decision.
It was win win - we play Monty but keep Giles in so we don't weaken the batting - it seemed like a no brainer.
It sends completely the wrong message out to the Aussies and you can't help thinking they'll be breathing a sigh of relief.

I feel indifference towards Monty. Giles is the clear choice for the Spin option. He can take the wickets, he can get the runs and is a safe pair of hands in the field - all of which are necessary to win test matches. Can the same be said of Monty?

I think duncan fletcher knows more about the england team then anyone else, maybe he thinks monty is not on best form at the mo, it was probably a differcult decision. Poor old monty though

G'day Thuddie,
Thank you for your question.
As an Australian I am glad although it would be interesting to see him play. I watched at the PM's XI in Canberra but he only bowled a couple of overs.
It shows that England are worried about their batsman. Given that they have won the toss, they would want their best spinner bowler which according to many of the best judges is Panesar.
Mind you if Giles picks up a brace of wickets it will be an inspired decision. I doubt that he will pick up more than Shane Warne though.
Regards

I don't understand england's selections sometimes, you've got one of best english spinners in a long time and you don't use him, they talk about whether a pitch will spin who cares if it don't warne get's spin out of any pitch and monty's the same!!!

Sad he is a far better bowler than Giles. To be honest after the first test I thought it was to fire him up so he doesn't take his place for granted & then he'll be even more up for the Aussies.
Obviously I was wrong & the Aussies must be relieved.

I think its another cop out by fletcher. He is far more likely to get wickets that the king of spain. All this not as good a batsmen is rubbish. You don't pick bowlers to get runs.

It does not make any difference to me as England Team Management has taken decision to play only one spinner and they considered Giles the first option.

If you mean Monty the Python, then that makes me very sad indeed. "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"
