You Can Connect To The Internet Out-Of-The-Box, You'll Just Need A Wireless Connection From A Wireless Router Or WiFi Hotspot..

Currently, All Of The PSP's Online Capabilities Are Free And Requires No Paid Subscription, Including Games..
There's Currently No Game I Can Think Of That Uses The Internet Connection That Needs A Subscription.

To Play Online, You'll Need A UMD (sony's universal media disk) Game That Supports 'Infrastructure Mode', That's The Mode You Use To Get Online (it says on the back of the umd box, 'ad-hoc' is only wireless gameplay with others around you).
Some Games Are Different On What They Do With The Connection, Sometimes It's Online Play, Sometimes To Download Extra Levels Or Items, All For Free..

Again, All You'll Need Is A Wireless Connection To Take Advantage Of The PSP's WiFi Capabilities..

I remember it's kinda fiddly to set up wi-fi for a psp... but it comes built-in, but sometimes you need extra stuff to get it working... two discs... goat sacrifice... you know, stuff like that.
