the other night i was workin on my 92 mustang and the tranny all of a sudden stopped workin, it wont go in gear and it wants to go forward in neutral. i dont know what could be causin this so i would like a detailed explanation on how to check or fix this or troubleshoot it if anyone can help thanks very much

could to much tranny fluid do it, if so, i was drivin it fine like 5 min before it stopped so i dont know

what were you working on and what transmission,auto or stick

You probably just messed up the linkage. You have to disconnect it, manually get the transmission into a known gear by moving the shift lever on the transmission, move the gearshift to that gear position and tighten everything back down.

Well if it's standard trans i had the same thing happen. For me it was a spring in the pressure plate broke causeing the clutch to not dissengage. Brand new defective part. man did i hate taking the tranny out twice. Nightmare i will never forget,, lol

you may have problems with the valve body in it causing this to happen,,i own a repair shop,and this can occur at any time while driving it,,my experience with them is when they do this,,they need to be rebuilt to get them right again if you start wasting money on minor repairs to it,,soon it all adds up so id have a good tranny mechanic look at it ,and see what he says about it,,good luck,i hope this help,s.

allot of times when you have the problem you have the forward and direct clutches in the trans have burned together the only thing to do is have it rebuilt or replace it with a used one, my opinion have it rebuilt there are updates that can be done that will make it better the new

check the tranny cable that comes from inside the car. also make sure you have tranny fluid in the tranny

maybe all of a sudden the shifting cable broke.you might check that,because it would keep it from going into the right gear.
