There is quite a bit of activity going on and many organizations around the country who are working for legalization.

It is difficult to get state laws overturned because there is a conflict with Federal laws and because the Federal government puts quite a bit of effort into fighting any attempt at reform.

However, there was recently an initiative on the ballot in Nevada, and one in Colorado, that each would have effectively legalized marijuana in small amounts in each state. The initiatives lost, but the Nevada initiative got 44 percent of the vote -- enough to encourage the proponents to try again next time.

In other localities, some activists are trying a tactic of passing local ordinances to make enforcement of the marijuana laws a "lowest priority" for police. They cannot repeal state law on the subject, but they can direct police to regard it as a low priority. There have been quite a number of these ordinances passed around the country.

In addition, there has been an extensive public education program by reformers over the last 15 years or so. If you have visited any debate forums on the subject you may note that those in favor of legalization pretty well dominate the subject. That is no accident. Reformers put the research material on the net long ago, and the research on the subject is quite clear.

If you want more information, or want to get active yourself, I suggest the following places to start:

http://druglibrary.org/schaffer -- Thousands of studies, historical documents, and other information on the subject.

http://www.mapinc.org -- Thousands of current newspaper articles on the subject. This is a good place to catch up on current events and get a detailed answer to your question.

Organizations:

http://www.mpp.org
http://www.leap.cc - Law Enforcement Against Prohibition -- This is a group of current and retired law enforcement officials who have come to the conclusion that prohibition should be ended. Quite an impressive group of people.

I think it would be a serious mistake to legalize smoking marijuana. Like any hot gas, it can damage the lungs.

Now Happy Brownies, that's a horse of a different color - and after a few of them, you'll see Wizard of Oz colored horses. Oh, yes.

Nothing, it has never entered federal court or legistlation, where it must be done since it is FEDERALLY BANNED. otherwise, California, Hawai'i and Minnesota would have successfully legalizaed it when they tried. Minnesota was the first I believe trying to make it no-penalty, only confiscation back in the 70's.
