The answer to that question is lost in antiquity. Garnets were known to man before writing was invented.

Way, way ago. I have in my collection some garnets that were used as gizzard stones by a plant eating dinosaur living in America 100 million years ago. Their use has given them an attractive "tumble polished" finish.
