Those that desire security over liberty, - deserve neither.
- Ben Franklin
(or a close paraPhrase)
.. exactly
Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
Fat Americans (today) know nothing of ultimate tyranny, lack of movement, speech, and a host of other liberties we take for granted. If (when) America falls, - it's because we listened to the liberals, which preaches communication,... then compromise,... then (diversity) accommodation,.. then embrace,... then 'overthow'. With tyranny as a 2-tier society with the few-over-the-many.

Benjamin Franklin said "Those willing to give up a little liberty for a little security deserve neither security nor liberty."
It's a delicate balance, but I would definitely pick security over liberty.
On the other hand, living in constant fear of terrorists, and I assume that's what this question is about, is no kind of liberty. You can't have liberty without security.

The state's underlying assumption that we'll be safer and more secure if the government is bigger and more aggressive.
That's not exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind. The motto on the title page of "An Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania," published in 1759, attributed to Benjamin Franklin: "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. You're nothing if you ain't free." Those stuck in prison and in wretched marriages are secure in their own ways. I pick liberty and freedom over security because I don't care to be controlled other than by paying my bills and conforming to the law. That's my "why."
