I think he was but i really cant remember and its bugging me, was he or is my memory playing tricks on me.

No,your mind isn't playing tricks on you.He was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker.He also wore a little pair of glasses.Bagpuss was my favourite character though and have a little cuddley Bagpuss which speaks when his belly's pressed.Happy memories.

Yes, a carved wooden Bookend in the form of a Woodpecker. I live in the west of England, where Yaffle is indeed an old word for Woodpecker!
