I was wondering this because African Americans of today have last names like Carter or Johnson or something along those lines and I'm pretty sure those are not native names to Africa.

Slaves couldn't 'take' anything. They'd be whipped if they did.
Initially, when brought over from Africa, the African first names like Coobah, Phiba, etc were present. Many times these were changed for the owner's convenience, sometimes to rediculous names like 'Mary Princess of Wales' (Mary Prince) or other high-sounding (but insulting) monikers. Slaves didn't have last names. Only much later, after they were freed did they start to adopt them.

More complicated than that. Some were originally identified by an Anglicized first name, then the family name of the owner ("Benson's Tom" might become "Tom Benson). After the Civil War, many freed slaves took the family names of former owners, or of famous Americans like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or Thomas Jefferson.

Of course, in the case of the Jeffersons, many are truly related to Thomas through his dalliance with his slave Sally Heming, since proven by DNA analysis.

becuse we, whites, don't dwell on the past. also we don't have the need as a race to have some form of reason/excuse for the things that have affected us. look at the site listed and learn a little reason why the history of white slavery isn't a focal point to our race.
