You can buy an external hard drive, with software that makes it easy to back up your computer. It's a good idea to do this fairly regularly, just after doing a virus scan. If you'd like to be able to return your computer to good condition easily in the future, pick one up, and back up the hard drive once you get it back into good shape.
To bring your computer back to good condition, first, download all the windows security patches, and your security software (ie antivirus) patches. Put them on a disk (preferably a cd) and set it aside. You'll want it soon.
Second, check what disks the computer came with. You've probably got several, incuding a windows disk, possibly a couple of disks with software you want, and several disks with software you've never used. The disks with things you want probably came with serial numbers, or other ids. Don't make any major changes to your computer till you find them. (If necessary, they are on the computer, till you wipe the computer, you can call tech support for help).
After that, disconnect your computer from the internet (go ahead and unplug it). Reinstall windows. Install your security software (firewall, antivirus), then install the updates from that disk. Do not connect to the internet until you've installed the security updates, you don't want to undo all that work you've done, cleaning out all the critters.
Go ahead and reinstall any other software you want (office) and reconnect to the internet. If you decided to go for the back up device, now's a good time to use it.

any windows disk plus drivers from the website or driverguide.com..the key should be on the side of the comptuer for whatever windows system you have. you wont have the specifics to the company like the marketing info but its basically garbage anyway so i wouldnt worry bout it much.
