Details first, then the question.
Details: the couple sued their direct tv or whatever company because they charged them for porn that they never ordered. the port was ordered on sept 11 when the couple were watching the memorials for that day. the couple ended up fighting among each other as to who ordered it. finally they sued for a million dollar for "emotional upset"

so my question is, how could someone sue for that great of an amount. does emotional upset cost a million dollars? who is anyone to tell how "emotionally upset they were"?
can they be lying just for that?

i hear a lot of suites for millions of dollars for stuff like that. is there something i'm missing?

thanks

There are a lot of frivilous lawsuits out there with people asking for outrageous amounts of money.....Why do you think insurance is so high? Healthcare is so high? Just about anything these days has been affected by these types of lawsuits.....and WE end up paying for it in the long run. The costs are passed onto the consumers......

Lawyers always sue for outrageous amounts, in the hopes that the victim (erm....defendant) will settle rather than fight the suit.

In this case, their "emotional distress" sounds more like "gullibility," and if the case survives summary judgement I will be very surprised.

suing for that much doesn't mean they'll get it,
but i do wonder about the granny who won the hot coffee suit from mcdonald's, i mean who wants cold coffee?
i could handle a whooole bunch of emotional upset for a million $

Attorney's aren't paid by the glass. I've been told that some need to be buttered-up. I'm so motivating.
