Depends on how much money you want to spend.
Dells are economical and best of all they work!
If you want something with an incredible amount of computing power, get an Alienware or a Voodoo computer. These can cost upwards of $3000 though.
As far as system specs you need at least a 2.5Gigahertz processor, 2Gigs of RAM, CD/DVD Dual-layer RW drive and about 80 Gigs of Hard drive space.
Also you want an ATI graphics card. Make sure your new computer is Vista compatible. Microsoft is going to force us to go that way by this summer.

Dell are s**t, excuse the swearing, I had nothing but trouble with mine, and the follow up customer service is abysmal. I ended up going to www.meshcomputers.com and never looked back. They have a 3 year return warranty, and you can customise them to however you want them. They are quite expensive, but u get what u pay for :) Also HP, Dell & Gateway are a nightmare to upgrade any components...

It really depends on what you plan to use it for. If you have no idea, get the cheapest one you can like at walmart or something. otherwise, you will spend a lot of money for crap you dont really need. Also computers depreciate rapidly, which is why I build my own and do frequent upgrades.

i'd purely bypass for a computer, for an similar cost of that one Mac. you may want to get a authentic reliable computer round two times the speed. For the failings that you're doing i'd advise purely getting a operating laptop or computer. computers for the most section contain extra gigs etc then a operating laptop or computer as well as being more less expensive.

Unless you're a gamer I'd reccomend a mac.
www.apple.com
Look into getting an iMac
Otherwise, you'd want a PC (for gaming)
www.ibuypower.com is good
or you could build your own
Do NOT buy HP or Dell or Gateway~~~~
