Why do people read tabloids? They like dirt, and want to know the source. So, they naturally assume if not told.

I think you're really generalizing and this question has no answer, actually. But I guess I'll offer a solution.
Maybe people are worried about what others think about them, and therefore they pick apart what others say to try to see if that person likes them or is actually saying something bad about them.

They are illiterate or they have been to Canada and have too much Molsons by now. BTW, If you lift your thumb does a car pull over to give you a ride.
