I think my boss and his assistant are having an affair. They seem to leave for "lunch" at the same time several times each week. One day there was an urgent situation here at the office and I had to call the assistant. She said, "I'll be there in 2 minutes, call the boss and let him know." When I called the boss, he already seemed to know what I was going to say (how?) and he said, "I'm 4 minutes away. I'll be right there." There are several hotels in the area...all within 10 minutes or less of our building. They both showed up within 2-3 minutes of each other. Before this incident another employee made a snide comment about them leaving the office together a few weeks ago. Now one of them leaves and the other leaves 5-10 minutes later. Turnover has been high. I wonder if this has anything to do with turnover. Have you ever worked in an office where the boss had an affair with an employee? How did it affect everyone else in the office?

Yes. The assistant was actually already married so she divorced her husband, married the boss and then had the boss' baby.

She kept her job at the company but they gave her a new supervisor who 'coincidentally' had to report to her new husband. So come on common sense shows she'll never get a bad report.

It didn't really affect others. Everyone knew it was happening and the assistant had the type of personaility where you knew she was in it just for the money. As soon as she married the boss she sold her old car and bought a spanking new Infinity. Gotta love the office romance huh? lol

Yes, I have and it distracts the employees too much. It is worse, however, if one or both of them are married: Then the employees feel like they are accessories to adultery.

Is there a company policy against this sort of fraternization between employees.

If the boss owns the company there is not much you can do. If he has a superior then maybe some people can drop some hints

There are subtle ways to approach this and I hope you and your fellow employees can figure out how to get the word to the boss and his assistant.

I once worked for a man who fell completely in love with my best friend and co-worker. He was married but they had been unhappy for some time and had no children. He filed for divorce and it took a long time but now he and my friend have been married 25 years - together for 30 years and have a lovely daughter.

Sometimes people cannot help themselves if they are truly in love but for the most part it is a lustful thing that needs to be conducted far far away from the office and after hours.

This is never a good idea. If he is the owner, or even has the power to affect your pay, then how will anybody know if she gets all the raises and you get half what you deserve? You will always have doubts about what the real deal is. ALWAYS! And it is not fair to anybody. Your boss has a legal obligation to solve this problem. You need to keep track of everything. WRITE it ALL down! Check with a Department of Labor person or some other person, but I think after you write it all down you, or somebody at the firm needs to file an official notice that you have noticed the issue and request him to solve the problem since you think it could negatively impact the company and he has a legal responsibility to solve this issue. Find out if he is insured and talk to a lawyer right away.

The bosses credibility is on the line and employees are short changed by the partiality to this illicit person. Generally the work of the adulteress does not get done and works against productivity. THat person get an undeserving promotion and the desiring individual loses their career path to an undeserving person.

Tell the higher ups (deep throat). Watch that boss disappear with the Ms one.

Yeah, I worked in a big place where it was happening with several management types. They'd hire people specifically for that purpose and brag about it during smoke breaks.

Organization was a cluster----. Morale was terrible. Nobody seemed to care. Eventually things got so bad we had some employees threatening bringing guns to work.

Of course, this is a spectacular example, but still.

On the other hand, I think it's fine if it's not skeazy.
