I've heard the Waterfront area and Long street are safe

Waterfront is safe, but helluva expensive. I prefer the areas Gardens and Tamboerskloof, where I live: Close to the city centre, without being in the middle of it. I can recommend Ashanti Lodge ( beautiful view over Table Mountain, Swimming pool, lush garden, nice dorms, friendly staff) or Zebra Travel Lodge (quiterer, big rooms, cozy patio, safe parking). Breakfast tip: Beleza, which is around the corner. Fpr R10 ( 90 dollar cents) you get two eggs, toast, bacon and tomato. :-)

There's a nice one in upper Long street (on the left walking up), but i can't remember the name. Long street and the Waterfront IS safe. Just watch out for pickpocketers.
Rule of thumb: At night stay in an area where there are lots of people.
Ask your hostel management about transport (shuttles, taxi's) to the Waterfront.
Enjoy!!

I stayed at the Aardvark Backpackers which forms part of the Lions Head Lodge in the Sea Point area. The accomodation is in self contained flats in the complex that each sleep about 12 across 2 rooms. I travlled there as a single female and felt safe.

At night Sea Point isn't the safest of places (or it wasn't back in 2003 when I was there) but there was always plenty going on in the hostel to want to go elsewhere., and if we did go out we took taxi's from door to door.

The hostel has it's own travel centre which is great for booking and planning your onwards journey around SA and also for booking day excursions to Cape Point, the Winelands and city tours. You're also on the main road down to the waterfront and town centre so can easily get a bus in.

Best approach is not to assume that anywhere is safe because criminals are mobile. Whichever part of CT (or SA in fact) you're in, steer clear of cash in transit vans. Armed robbery of these has been the fastest growing category of crime and people in the street keep losing their lives in the gun battles that ensue. I was recently there for a few months and a 5 month old baby, being carried on her mother's back, was shot dead when robbers and security guards opened fire on each other.
Another wonderful CT spot - Kirstenbosch Gardens - has also recently become the focus for armed robbery. It seems to be everywhere, so if you're staying in a hostel, without the security of a hotel, just take extra care.

Nowhere is safe - even the Waterfront has had it's share of armed robberies. And that clot who makes the comparison to London is leading you up the garden path. Google crime south africa and you can pick and chose from the numerous reports of violent crime in Cape Town which are not isolated to particular areas.

Long street hostels are safe. Just be sensible, as you would anywhere in London too. Be confident.
