It gives the public an opportunity to see and hear the candidates that they will be voting for. A chance to understand their views and decide if they are worthy of getting a vote.
Public debates, along with the recent 'Town Hall Meetings' that have popped up in the last few years are vital in allowing voters to size up and interact with candidates and make a somewhat informed decision.

Debate can be a very important part of life, not just political debate. Political debate is intended to assist in having an informed voting public. In Politics today, where lying is so prevalent, nothing a politician states in a debate can inform anyone. Posting questions on Yahoo answers should encourage debate but usually all you get is a bunch of stupid, vulgar, uneducated, ridiculous answers.

Isn't that a rather silly question, would you vote for someone if you did not know their political stance? If I have never heard of a candidate,I research their views and I want to hear what they say to the public and how they react to the public. All those are important to me.What type of political system do you have in your country? We dont want dictators such as Hitler,we want someone who is for America and for protecting America.

Because they allow each candidate to argue their point, while receiving criticism. it also shows which candidate is weaker on which issues, which in turn allows for the people to have a plethora of knowledge on both sides of the issues and to take a stance....or at least that is what they used to do.

One of the few opportunities to hear the candidates opinion from the candidate rather from the spin-misters and media hacks.
