I am 28 weeks pregnant and get recurrent UTI's. I see a urologist along with my OB-GYN right now. My urologist says the UTI bacteria strain that I have right now is only treatable with Gentamycin or Cipro, both class C antibiotics. She said she would consult with my OB-GYN before prescribing me with anything first. Well I've done some research and it sounds like Gentamycin can cause deafness or kidney problems in unborn fetuses. And Cipro has caused skeletal fusion in fetuses of pregnant rats. I know not taking antibiotics for a UTI could pose risks for me as well, like premature labor. But I am scared to take class C antibiotics, and even if my OB-GYN approves of them, I don't think I could take them as I'm a worry wart and would be afraid they were harming my baby. What should I do??

Tell your concerns to both of your doctors and see what they say. Sometimes we have to pick the lessor of the 2 evils.

Your OBGYN knows best. It would be better to take a class C antibiotic and cure your UTI than to have your kidneys shut down, right? Class C just means that it is unknown what the effects are on an unborn baby. The tests they have done show those things, but are not definate. Also, you are out of the really dangerous time in pregnancy when a lot of things can damage the fetus. Definatly tell your Dr. that you are worried and allow him/her to explain it all to you. That's what they get paid the big bucks for! Good luck and feel better!

Class C drugs are dangerous, but not the most dangerous. Consult both doctors, maybe get a third opinion from your physician, and then pick what is best for both of you. Drink lots of cranberry juice, thats good for UTIs. Best of luck!

I would talk to your OB about your fears. It's possible that the drug is only dangerous at certain points during the pregnancy. Maybe there is another drug you could take. Also remember that your doctor may decide the risk of NOT taking a drug is greater then the risk of giving it. Check on dosing information too.

i wouldnt worry your doctor wouldnt give you any perscriptions that would harm you or the baby so i would talk to your obygn before taking anything and i would voice your opinions and concerns to him/her
