Why did the band soundgarden break up?

Because they were smart enough to recognize that "grunge" era was just about up and decided to leave on their own terms instead of having some label hump "make a business decision". It was pretty evident that Chris and Matt still had the drive to continue playing, but I wonder what Kim went on to pursue.

Problems within the band. I had heard that Ben Sheppard (the bass player) had walked out.
