You can get pro level security absolutely free. Layered protection is better than a suite.

You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo security suite.

You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus

You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware

And these are useful utilities;
Shields Up security site;

http://www.mozilla.com/ Firefox web browser and Thunderbird e-mail program.
http://www.opera.com/ Opera web browser
Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.

http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.
http://www.sys-shield.com - AbsoluteShield File Shredder
http://www.mailwasher.net/ -spam filter
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Lavasoft-ARIES-Rootkit-Remover.shtml - Aries Rootkit remover.
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html - Bitdefender doesn't run in the background and can be used as a second back up anti virus.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

You need three major programmes. An Antivirus, An adware sweeper and a decent Firewall.

Grisoft offer an excellent Antivirus (AVG) thats free for home use. Version 7.1 is being discontinued Jan 15th but there will be a new, free AVG version 7.5. I have used this programme for the past three years and have not been bothered by any virus ( touch wood) What I like about AVG is that it checks its updated virus definitions list every time you connect to the internet so you have up to the minute protection. They also do an anti spyware programme thats also free but I have not tried it. I am happy with the free version from Lavasoft (Adaware).Updates are frequent and has never let my down. Finally Firewall. To be honest I am more than happy with the Microsoft Firewall that came with SP2 but used to have a free programme from Zonelabs called Zone Alarm. The zone alarm still gets great reviews in computer mags as do AVG and Adaware. I just found it too cautious and flagged up everything even remotely suspicious. Not a bad thing really.

There you go, three great programmes all for free. Dont forget to have your automatic updates turned on. I know Microsoft is full of holes but they do issue patches frequently but you need to keep up to date.

In PC World magazine, PANDA was ranked higher than McAfee & Norton in both antivirus and security softwares. Both consumers/customers and experts ranked. PANDA won because of easiness to use, updates daily by its-self (never asks you for anything; sees a virus, auto remove), EXCELLENT custoemr service and absolutlely free 24/7 (norton/mcafee you have to pay on the weekends)
I've had PANDA on my PC for 3 years now and havent had any viruses, worms or trojans....
Oh, also, if a virus, trojen or worm somehow attckes your PC and (we'll say) takes out your harddrive, they will replace your harddrive at retail price.
I know Staples sells it and also www.pandasoftware.com

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

norton is a good option, zone alarm is also a option
zone alarm pro has anti-virus and/or spyware (depends on which you buy)
the anti-virus is provided by etrust which is not that great but the firewalls very good.
overall tho norton will be better bet.
if you want a all in one

The best I've found is Norton System Works. I have it on all 3 of my computers. It's not the cheapest but it's the best.
