Umm it depends on where you live.
In Ontario, Canada women who give birth get 17 weeks leave, (15 paid, the first two weeks unpaid). This is maternity leave. Women who have miscarriages after a certain point are also entitled to this leave.
Then there is 35 weeks of parental leave for moms, dads, or adoptive parents. This is 35 weeks per child and can be split between caregivers if desired. It is also paid.
Both maternity and parental leave are paid at 55% to a maximum of somewhere around $450/week.
It is the same in some provinces. Quebec gets more leave, that I know for sure.
Also some companies offer benefits above and beyond local law

Under the Family Medical Leave Act, fathers have the right to take time off from work when a child is born or adopted into the family. Just like women however, it is NOT paid leave. The only way that a woman can get paid leave for the birth of a child is if they apply for disability. Then, you only have a (very short) specified amount of time that you can qualify and be paid (usually 6 weeks).

The way it works in Canada is that you can get a year off for maternity leave. That can be split between the 2 parents is almost anyway they want. I believe that the mother does have to take at least 12 weeks though.
(That is of course that both parents have worked enough hours to get mat leave.)

Not in the U.S. unfortunately our government doesn't believe that dads should take time off to help with their new families. it's a shame really.
There are countries that do have paternity leave out there though, I know my DH is quite envious of them. He has to use his vacation to be home with me after the baby is born. Thankfully his work is nice enough to not have him schedule it and be able to take it starting when I go into labor. Otherwise he would have to guess or possibly not be there for the birth.

Some companies do offer Paternity leave and/or so do some insurances. I had insurance with my first baby that paid me six weeks for maternity leave and would have paid 3 wks for paternity leave for the dad if he had been on my insurance. The father should check with the benefits coordinator for his job.

What state are you in? In California, there is a Family Medical Leave Act that covers many employers, that will give you unpaid leave to bond with a newborn. Check your states Labor board or equivalent.
btw, mazel tov on the new, bouncing bundle of joy.

My husband gets off with pay if he has personal days or vacation coming but that's all and it is up to him how long he takes.
A women gets atleast 6 weeks but a man doesn't get that long. Maybe a week. It really just depends on his job though. With our son My husband had 4 days off.
