Our Labour gov't has just announced that road charging will be introduced. If the money raised from Road Fund Licences, duty on fuel, and speed camera fines were to be appropriated solely for road maintenance and provision, we would be able to replace every A road, every B road, and every unclassified road on the mainland within 6 years. That is replace - not just repair! Are we being ripped off or what? Any Americans out there enlighten me as to the cost of motoring in the US?

We have to pay a license fee every year here in the US. In some places, like Nebraska, you also have to pay a wheel tax $35 and personal property tax each year, based on the value of your vehicle.
Other places like South Dakota, you only pay the license fee, no wheel or personal property tax, ****, what am I doing, I should move back to South Dakota huh??

I just can't see this working. Will car tax and fuel tax be abolished? I doubt it, so EVERYTHING will go up in price as the additiional cost of transport is passed on to the consumer. How will public transport cope? it can't now. What about people who depend on cars, as there is no public transport. How will cars be monitored? I believe it's by a gps sytem - what happens when these are stolen, as sat nav systems are at the moment? The cost of this system will be astronomical. How about the job loses in the motor industry? Sounds simple, but I think it will be a disaster.

It's just another money making scheme dreampt up by some numb nuts to make us think the government wants us to go by public transport instead.... Knowing full well that the money will be channelled off into other areas to pay for their screw-ups over the past nine years!
I have just gone self employed into the courier business and am horrified at the weekly cost of driving. I do in excess of a thousand miles a week.
My only choice is to pass the extra cost of motoring onto my customers, which means higher prices for there customers...you.
And I am not the only one. All transport companys will have to raise their prices. All lorries that deliver to our shops throughout the country will have to raise prices. Which means... EVERYTHING that you purchase will have to have a raised price to cover the cost of transport.
It is going to be disastrous all round.

No i do no longer have confidence the government they at the instant are not doing this for our environment/risk-free practices/or benefit they're doing it to earn greater money to cover expenses while they have overspent on different ridiculous schemes. it is all ok penalising automobiles and lorries etc yet no longer until they have taken care of out the widespread public transports matters ie the lack of ability of it. you could on no account completely make certain that suggestion won't fall into the incorrect palms yet greater team and risk-free practices will could be presented which will value greater money and interior the long-term it won't benefit each and every individual. If our governments cared approximately what they have been doing they does no longer have based our transport industry on the roads interior the 1st place they might have saved it on the trains yet on the time, the fast term rapid money saving answer became into street transport. They knew those issues might upward thrust up yet did no longer care because of the fact it does no longer be their difficulty in years yet to return this is strictly what's going on now with this street charging scheme. Our Governments hardly do something for the finished thing approximately our u . s . yet schemes to get them voted in on the subsequent election.

I agree - this is a stealth tax and the funds raised are misappropriated. People would be far more happy about paying the tax if they were confident that it was being put to good use. Any monies raised from the sources you mention should be ringfenced for both roads and public transport services.
