Does it waste more gas to leave the car idling in place or to stop the car and turn it on? (while I'm sitting and waiting on someone for, lets say, 10 to 15 minutes)

The longer you idle, the less valuable it becomes to leave it on.

However, I would suggest that it becomes more expensive to leave the car idle when approaching the 15-25 minute barrier.

It is significantly more expensive to restart a vehicle than to leave it idle, however, time is a significant dependency.

Other important factors are the number of cylinders, the displacement volume of the engine, and the technology of the specific vehicle that is used to start/stop the engine.

As an aside, the nearby populace will appreciate your not leaving it idle and keeping the emissions cloud around for those 15 minutes!

Assuming your car is a late model with fuel injection its much better to turn it off. Why do you think cars get better millage on the highway than in town. Part of it is having to idle at stop lights, and yes I know that accelerating is also part of it.

I'd agree with turning it off, if it's more than 5 minutes.

Unless you're in 2oF frozen land like me, in which case, I'm burning the gas to keep *me* warm.
