You look at the undertones of your skin based on your inner wrist. Pink or blue undertones are cools, yellow or peach undertones are warms. Veins that look more blue are cools, veins that look more green are warms. Then your hair and eyes will place you into the season. Once you know which season you are, then you find the clothing colors that are recommended for that season. And you aren't limited to that season either. Cools can "borrow" between summer and winter, while warms can borrow from spring and autumn.
The first two are very basic introductions to choosing clothing colors based on your coloring, while the third is more in depth. While it is a bit more complicated, it's also a great source of information about good colors, and what to look for.

if you are a winter it means you look good in brights. if you are an Autumn white will wash you out. autumns look much better in off-white. springs and summers can wear white white.
