i think in terms of america and other industrialized nation that can utilze space travel and has vested interest in it. there are to many people that waste there lives on trivial crap (sports, celebrities,) plus when dictators cuase problems resourses go from such commodities like space travel to military expence. i think if we can cut these cancers from our society we would have the leasure to focus on space travel
some beilieve if the library of alexandri wasnt destroyed and scientific enlightenment had flourished we may be colonizing the solar sytem by know, but its imposible to say what would have happend

Public interest in space travel has waxed and waned over the decades ever since "crazy" novelists proposed it. It probably hit the peak during the Cold War because of the historical combination of strong belief and optimism about what science can do for mankind at the time (1950s-1960s), and out of fear that godless commies would beat us to space. It's still one of the most remarkable achievements of mankind to have put man on the moon in such a short space of time, and the Saturn V rocket that put man there still remains the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. Space exploration has since lost interest, because there never seemed to be any compelling reasons why we are sending the Shuttle out there at such tremendous cost. However, once economic incentive is found for returning to space, such as mining of 3He, an extraordinarly valuable fuel for fusion power, on the surface of the moon, there could once again be a new "gold rush" back out into space.

There is an amazing level of interest in space exploration, at least of the unmanned variety - look at the millions of hits the Mars Pathfinder probes got on their website... but first, factor out the peculiar political game NASA must play in order to get its budget approved.
NASA puts astronauts in space for one reason and one reason only: to show that the USA can do it. Doing so boosts the perceived value of our exports, for one thing. Let's not kid ourselves - manned spaceflight is very, very tough to pull off successfully.
Much as manned air flight was in the 1920s. But we've not yet put that kind of investment into space travel in order to make it accessible.
And that's an adequate reason, I think, why there's not the interest in space there once was: it's clear that the high frontier won't be opened up for civilians, through government programs.
What's the point in getting excited about manned space flight, when even *astronauts selected to fly* will often wait years until they get their chance? (source 1.)

Personally, I am very interested, if you pay for it I would love to go to the moon.
People on the other hand are probably tired of spending billions and billions of dollars every year to support a few satelites and a telescope that can take pictures of stuff so far away you will mess yourself if you think about it. We have not been to the moon in over 30 years. Half the stuff we send out to explore breaks. AND above all of that, little green men have never landed and said hi.

Until a way is found to travel faster than the speed of light, space travel will not be very appealing. It takes light years to get from place to place in our galaxy.

I think it is several things. First, I think most folks dont want to know what's out there -- if there anything or if there isnt anything. Secondly, all this stuff we see about UFOs and Aliens is usually scary -- that doesn't help. Lastly, the cost is a bid deterrent.
