Subtract 0.96 from both sides:
-19.44H^-2 = -0.96

Multiply both sides by H²:
-19.44 = -0.96*H²

Divide both sides by -0.96
H² = 19.44 / 0.96

Simplify and reduce:
H² = 1944 / 96
H² = 81 / 4

Take the square root of both sides
H = sqrt(81 / 4)
H = ±(9/2)

according to http://www.themathpage.com/alg/negative-exponents.htm#negative,
H^-2 is equivalent to 1/(H^2)

1.original equasion
.96-19.44H^-2 = 0
2.subtract .96 from each side
-19.44H^-2 = -.96
3. multiply both sides by (-1)
19.44H^-2 = .96
4. divide both sides by 19.44. since 19.44/19.44=1, we can simply write:
H^-2 = .96/19.44

5. to simplify .96/19.44, we can multiply top and bottom by 100, getting 96/1944 = 4/81

6. therefore
H^-2 = 4/81
7. inverting both sides
H^2 = 81/4
8. take square root of both sides
H = sqrt(81/4)
9. using example 6 in http://www.themathpage.com/alg/simplify-radicals-2.htm
H = sqrt(81 * 1/4)
H = 1/2 sqrt (81)
10 sqrt(81) = 9, so
H = 1/2 * 9 = 4.5

Subtract .96 from each side
-19.44H^-2 = -.96
Divide by -19.44
H^-2 = -.96/-19.44
H^2 = 19.44/.96
H^2 = 20.25
H=4.5

0 = 0.96 - 19.44H^2
Subtract 0.96 from both sides

-0.96 = 19.44H^2
Divide bith sides by 19.44

(-0.96 / 19.44) = H^2
Take the square root of both sides

H = (-0.96 / 19.44) ^0.5
