I love the idea that Kerry wanted to prove he could put war vet in Viet Nam on his resume years later. Oh yeah, that is, if he survived. Many men didn't. Kerry was wounded three times, that gave him a choice as to if he wanted to stay or not. No, he wasn't killed or seriously wounded, but to get a Purple Heart, it had to happen under enemy fire, so blame them if you insist, for bad aim. Some men at that time stood up and fought without looking for a way out, whether to Canada or marriage or college, or even borrowing the socks of a guy with foot fungus.
Others called on their rich friends and contacts and joined the National Guard. Its not like now, then it was a way out.
Getting drafted was the alternative for most boys, and the Army put you where they wanted you, not where you wanted to go, or what you wanted to do.
Many promises were made to our boys back then few were kept, Kerry was disgusted by the hemming and hawing the pols were doing when it came to keeping their promises to the vets and on the subject of the war. That disillusionment led to his post war activities.
All that seems forgotten now.

I wonder if the people calling Bush a coward have ever seen the business side of an AK-47. I wonder if they were singing the same tune when Bill Clinton was in office seeing as how Billy "It depends on what the definition of 'is' is" Clinton didn't have ANY military service. To answer your question: to each his own.

He apparently volunteered only after the draft deferment he had applied for was turned down — thus allowing him to choose service in the Navy to avoid being drafted into the Army.
Those in the Navy had higher survival rates than the Army.

Because George W. Bush is a chicken, yellow-bellied coward. You notice no one from his family is in the military fighting his war. Reading some of the above answers that support Chicken George are amazing. If Kerry faked his Purple Hearts you are saying the American military is a total joke. Real nice to be so unpatriotic. To nonalcoholic 2 - Did your daddy get wounded 4 times. I spent a year over there and I don't begrude anyone who was wounded 4 times the right to come home. If Kerry faked his medals then most likely all you Republican supporters that say you were over there also faked anything you might have earned. How else would you know how easy it was to fake it and get medals? What a bunch of bullcrap you Republicans are spouting on this one. Just like your hero, Chicken George W. Bush.
Wah, wah, wah! Keep crying Republicans-you lost.

Hanoi John?
He volunteered so he could join up with his Viet Cong buddies.
You notice he didn't wait too long to fake some scratches and put himself in for awards he didn't deserve so he could get back out.
Don't you get it?
How else does a guy who looks like Mr. Ed in drag get laid once in a while during the 60s if he didn't hook up with the acid-dropping skanks who populated the anti-war movement (and movement is an appropriate term). A sober woamn wouldn't go anywhere near that jackass-faced coward.
We used to call the types he hung with the Rarely Bathed Beauties, The Hairy Armpit Patrol, or the Pig-of-the Day Club. Hanoi John fit right in with them.

KERRY JOINED BECAUSE HIS DEFERMENT WAS REVOKED AND HE HAD TO JOIN OR BE DRAFTED
Bush joined to serve his country unless you don't think the National Guard is worth wild it is serving
Kerry was a Dr shopper to get unearned purple hearts that's why he won't release his medical records That's why he came back and lied about his fellow soldiers and time after time bad mouthed the military. He's just an America Hater
