What you have given us is an expression, not an equation. An equation could be solved for H, however an expression can not.

This is not an equation!
An "equation" has an "equals" sign in it.
If you meant that this equals zero, then
H = ±4.5
since if
.96 - 19.44H^-2 = 0
19.44H^-2 = .96 (by adding 19.44H^-2 to both sides)
19.44 = .96 * H^2 (by multiplying both sides by H^2)
H^2 = 19.44 / .96 = 20.25 (by dividing both sides by .96)
H = √(20.25) = ±4.5 (by taking the square root, noticing that there are two square roots for every number)

p.s. Setting it equal to y doesn't allow you to find a numerical value for H. y must be equal to some numerical value to find a numerical value for H. Again, if y=0 then
H = ±4.5
Otherwise, the answer is just H = ±√[19.44 / (.96 - y) ]

y = .96 - 19.44H^ -2
19.44H^ -2 = .96 - y
H^-2 = (.96 - y) / 19.44
H^2 = 19.44 / (.96 - y)
H = ±√[19.44 / (.96 - y) ]

In the new equation you would just move things over for y so:
Y-.96 =-19.44H^-2
then (19.44)/H^2 = Y-.96
multiple over and 19.44 = H^2(Y-.96)
you then devide by the Y bracket to get
H^2 = (19.44)/(Y-.96)
then square root each side to get H to equal:
plus or minues square root of (19.44)/(Y-.96)

I don't see an equal sign... or an equation. If you can set that expression equal to something I'm positive you'll get help!
