Mistletoe is the common name for various parasitic plants in the order Santalales. The name was originally applied to Viscum album (European Mistletoe, Santalaceae; the only species native in Great Britain and much of Europe), and subsequently to other related species, including Phoradendron leucarpum (the Eastern Mistletoe of eastern North America, also Santalaceae).

According to a custom of Christmas cheer, any two people who meet under a hanging of mistletoe are obliged to kiss. The origin of this custom may be related to the Norse story of Baldur coming back to life because of his mother Frigga (or Frigg), the goddess of love who removed the mistletoe's poison with her tears. When Baldur came back to life she kissed everyone who passed underneath the mistletoe out of happiness and gratitude and thus started the custom. Roman sources also mention misletoe was used by the celts in some sort of fertility rite or charm making the practise of kissing under it even more intriguing. Hence why mistletoe is used at Christmas, a time of love and joy.

I think it originated in Scandinavia. It probably began with a Love story passed down from generation to generation. MISTLETOE LOVE STORY Two Lovers had to sneak away into the woods to see each other. There, they could kiss underneath the Mistletoe without anyone knowing. When the girl's parents found out, they forbid her to leave their home alone. Her Lover managed to send a message to her. He said that they would run away to be together. He told her that he would make the preparations for their elopement. When everything was ready, he would leave a sprig of Mistletoe on her window ledge. At that time, she should run into the woods to meet him. The night finally came and she found the sprig of Mistletoe on her ledge. She climbed out her window and escaped into the night. She ran to the Forest and found her Lover there waiting for her. They embraced and kissed underneath the Mistletoe. Then, together, they vanished into the night. And they lived Happily Ever After. lol EDIT: You're not supposed to look it up- make up your own thing!
