"a history" is correct.
Explained: Words that begin with an h sound often require an a (as in a horse, a history book, a hotel), but if an h-word begins with an actual vowel sound, use an an (as in an hour, an honor). However, Merriam-Webster's Dictionary says that we can use an before an h- word that begins with an unstressed syllable. Thus, we might say an hisTORical moment, but we would say a HIStory book.

I say "a" history, but I have heard some people say "an" before an -h word for some reason.

you use a before a phonetically consonant sound, you use an before a phonetically vowel sound. Since when you say history you pronounce the "h" of the h you say a. If you said honor you would use an because you do not pronounce the consonant "h" you go right to the vowel sound

Does it realy matter as I'm sure/shure that you could use either and if not you could tear up a history book of English grammar but remember to inform the press and make it an historic event to the betterment of society. (Get it)

If the H is silent, then it is an. If the H is sounded, as in history, it is just a.
