Nintendo products have always been the most "kid-friendly" - in fact, the vast majority of compaints you'll see about Nintendo from other gamers is that the games are too "kiddy".
While Nintendo games do tend to be more colorful and "cartoony", they aren't necessarily "kiddy". Try completing Mario Sunshine with all shines and coins collected...
At any rate, you will find many games on the Nintendo that are rated E (for everyone) - and most will be good games. Part of the myth of the massive PS2 library of games is the fact that many many many of those games are horrible. I would rather have a system with a smaller number of quality titles to choose from than a system with a massive library of titles that must be sifted through carefully to find the good ones.
Finally, Nintendo is the ONLY system where you will find Pokemon and Mario - both very popular with the kids.
I'd also consider what the other poster said about a DS - the Wii will be hard to get by Christmas and since the DS is portable and has a massive library of games (plays DS and GameBoy Advance games) the entertainment factor is higher.

i think 7 might be too young for videogames, how about a nice remote control car. a 7 year has no idea what blue ray is, or what a hard drive does. they can barely tie their shoes. the wii can download every single nintendo game ever made, but only someone that grew up in the 80's can appreciate that. if you have to get something i would go with a nintendo gamecube (the wii might be too crazy) or a handheld. the games are more geared towards kids. hopefully he's at least heard of mario.

The Wii is better ideal for his age, plus you ought to purchase the classic Controller, that is a widespread controller he can use to play video games on the Wii (besides the actual undeniable actuality that you'll nonetheless choose the Wii distant to get entry to video games on the numerous menu). And at the same time as he receives better ideal, he can play stuff like Wii activities or Wii in good structure. besides, maximum 360 video games are for an older target audience (GTA IV, COD4, Halo, Rainbow 6, etc) and are truly no longer the fashion of video games you would get a 7 12 months previous.

I say anything that is nintendo like the wii, ds, advance, sp, or micro. Nintendo really makes more kid games then teen games but some teen games are really suppost to be rated Everyone. If you want to look at the ratings look at the backside of the game and it says either rated E,E 10 and up, T, M, A. E is for everyone. E 10 and up means every one 10 and up. T is for 13 year olds and up. M is for 17 and up. A is for i say 21 and up. Also in tha tbox it will probally say like cartoon violince or strong launguage. Thats how you know its good or not

I'd definately go fo the Wii because as it's Nintendo it has the best games for kids (and kids at heart), such as the Legendary SUPER MARIO games both new and can download the older mario games onto it too...... then of course there's "Legend of Zelda" and "Donkey Kong".. and it's also backward compatible with GAMECUBE games.
Playstation..... the PS2 isn't bad, only really major kids game for it I can think of is "Jak & Daxter" and a few Looney Tunes ones..... but most the games are mainly grown-ups ones, and there are also LOADS of budget games available for it which are some of the cr*ppest games I've ever seen.
XBOX...... games for that are also tend to be more intended for grown-up gamers.
There's a complete list of Wii games here:
http://uk.gamespot.com/wii/index.html
and Gamecube games here:
http://uk.gamespot.com/gamecube/index.html
A more portable option is the Nintendo DS, which he'll be able to play wherever he goes, not just in the livingroom but on long journeys too, or out in the garden (if you have one)..... with kid friendly games available such as:
- NEW Super Mario Bros
- MarioKart DS
- Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
- SuperMario 64 DS
- Yoshi's Island DS
- Pokemon
- Kirby (working title - TBA)
It's also pretty much the only electronic gadget I've bought in the last couple of years that hasn't gone wrong on me once in anyway (both cellphones on their last legs, shutter button fallen off the digital camera I bought about a month after I bought the DS.... DS still in almost perfect nick after 9/10months)
More blurb on it available here:

Playstation 2 is your best bet. I review games for entertainment publications and work with games for many platforms and the greatest number of kid friendly games can be found for PS2. The console is well priced (compared to the Wii and PS3, not to mention Xbox 360). The graphics are great. I honestly don't see much of a difference between Xbox 360 and PS2 graphics. I hope this helps!

X Box has too many violent games-many are rated M. Nintendo Gamecube has more kid-friendly games. The Wii has just been released, and now all of the problems with it are just starting to surface. According to Popular Mechanics web site, the system's games lack precision. A Gameboy or a Nintendo DS has a lot of kid-friendly games. I saw MANY kid-friendly games for Nintendo DS at EB Games.

Wii all the way. Sure the other systems are better but most of the games for them are rated M. So far the highest rated game on the Wii is rated T. plus its fun for the whole family.
