My suggestion would be to live north of Seattle, perhaps someplace like Edmonds, Lake Forest Park, or Mountlake Terrace. They are all within reasonable commuting distance to Seattle, are less expensive, and are nicer than other suburbs.
It is my opinion that you'd probably want to steer clear of any of the southern suburbs if you are looking for less pollution. The airport is south of downtown and is cause for serious noise pollution!
Best of luck to you!

Good advice from other posters. Also check out http://www.city-data.com for some more great advice. The page for Seattle will give you the basic info like crime stats, population, demographics etc. and also the nearest small and large cities but the best part is the Forum for Seattle and the other areas around it where you can talk to other people from the area, ask specific questions about neighborhoods and such and get a feel for it. There are also a lot of questions and answers given in the past that you can search and read up on. Here's the direct link to the Seattle forum: http://www.city-data.com/forum/seattle/ good luck on your move and hope that helps.

Yes. I live IN Seattle (Queen Anne). I absolutely love it. Before that I lived in Kirkland for 20 years. Actually Bill Gates lives in Medina which is on the eastside (near Kirkland) just across the lake from Seattle.

If you are looking to live close to Seattle for a job or something like that I would suggest Auburn, or Renton for South of Seattle. Shoreline and Edmonds for North of Seattle and Bellevue or Kirkland for the Eastside. They are great areas, smaller cities compared to Seattle, and close enough to drive into the city within 20 mintues. Auburn, Renton, and Edmonds will be the cheapest since they are the farthest.

Issaquah is a great city to live in. On a good day it is a 13 minute commute to downtown Seattle, during rush hour it takes maybe 30 minutes, 45 tops. Issaquah is right next to Lake Sammamish and is surrounded by mountains. Squak Mountain, Cougar Mountain, Tiger Mountain. It is absolutely gorgeous. I would at least just take a drive around there.

If you just want to live near Seattle, try the Kitsap Peninsula. There are many communities each with its own personality. Poulsbo is Scandinavan in flavor. Bainbridge Island is a nice easy ferry ride away from Seattle as is Bremerton. Silverdale has the best schools and shopping. You can find as much or as little activity as you want. You can afford a much bigger house here than in Seattle.
I love it here.

Lake City is probably your best bet, though on one of our islands if you don't mind commuting to Seattle. Lake City is technically not in Seattle but the bus system here is GREAT and travel from any major city to another, especially Downtown Seattle is easy. Though Kent is still nice it is growing too quickly though you might look into that city as well. Most of Western Washington is linked and it's hard to tell where one city starts and the next begins, but I would say Lake City is best still.
