yeah, mounting is kind of like the assignment of a drive and initialization of the drivers to read them. Windows pretty much handles most mounting automatically when the hardware is plugged in, but other systems(like linux or Unix) sometimes require you to manually mount them.
So pretty much when you plug it in if you are using windows it will automatically detect and mount the drive, then if you want to remove it, to prevent damage to the data, you must unmount the drive(on the bottom right in windows it will usually have a remove hard drive icon). After removal it will say it is safe to remove the drive.
PS. Physically attaching the drive is also called mounting the drive...regardless of what some people say....but the mounting as far as your system is concerned is the detection, initialization, and assignment of the drive

All "mount" does is give you access to the files on that drive. Unmount does the opposite.
The terms mount and unmount are used in unix type operating systems but the same principle applies to windows. The only difference is that windows automatically mounts your hard drives and usb drives, etc. So when you plug in a little USB flash drive windows detects it and then "mounts" it so that it shows up in file manager.

Mount = Plug it in and let it be assigned a drive letter on the system.
UnMount = Logically or physically remove it from the system

It means making the drive accessible through the computers file system. It's done to make sure the operating system recognizes the drives media format.
It has absolutely nothing to do with physically installing a drive...despite the newbie advice given to you in this thread.

it means physically connecting the hardware to the rest of the computer. for internal hard drives, this means, installing it - opening the computer, connecting the data cables and power cables, and screwing it into place. for external drives, it means plugging it into the right port so that your master primary drive can recognize it and access

It basically means to insert or install.
You need to deactivate the drive before you remove it physically.
