I just found out I am pregnant. It will be a few weeks before I can get into a doctor. I have had problems with anemia for years, and I also never get enough calcium because I hate milk and alot of things that provide calcium. My friends recommended that I get the prenatal vitamins from the store (until I get a prescription for the good ones). Is there also anything else I can do? I can force myself to drink milk if I need to but just wanted suggestions on what I can do. Thanks in advance.

You can take viactiv chews to get calcium (they taste kind of like starburst) and take prenatal vitamins, they have them at GNC and health food stores. If the prenatal vitamins make you sick, you can take two flinstone vitamins ( I got the gummies and they taste like real gummie bears!) , and that you should help you out with all your nutrients. I was on WIC with my first baby so I had tons of milk and cheese, I would drink milk with entrees that made me thirsty, like pancakes and would bring swiss cheese and ritz crackers for lunch. I am really not big on diary myself, I only drank milk for the baby, also I ate cereal as a snack too, to get grains and get some more milk down.

ive been taking prenatal vitamins from the store bc same thing, I dont have an appt till dec. 14th. Other things you could do are drink a lot of orange juice and eat a decent amount of cereal (all these things are high in folic acid which is very important). If you dont like milk, for calcium, how do you feel about milk shakes or ice cream?! They are great substitutes!

Good luck!

Taking the prenatals from the store is a good idea. You're doctor may give you an extra calcium supplement. Be honest with them about not wanting/likely milk.

There is nothing better than the real thing. The prenatals are meant as a supplement, not a replacement.
Try eating dairies such as:

Cream cheese
Cheese sticks
Cottage cheese
Ice Cream
Yogurt

Also a tip...If the prenatals make you sick, you can take flintstones 2x a day.

There is a link to a free personalized vitamin and supplement profile at
( http://www.reducingstress.net ) It recommends what you should take based on a combination of your age, weight, gender exercise and eating habits.
I tried it and it was really good.
