my husband and i just installed windows xp home edition on a used dell computer that we got from his parents. we successfully installed the program but when we try to connect to the internet through our broadband connect.. it always tries to use dial up. we tried setting up a new internet connection many times, but still, when we try to get online, it tries to dial. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Is your Broadband a dsl or cable? If it is DSL it's still a dialup connection. The only difference is it uses a different signal than your phone. DSL connects to the same plug or port as your dial up connection. Cable connection is the only internet connection that doesn't have to use a dial up connection. I have roadrunner which is a cable connection. Have you called your Broadband tech support and asked them for help?

wow, loser answer Mrs. Ed. anyway, first make sure you have internet coming to the cable you're plugging into your router. if you do, then you're either doing something wrong with the router setup, or it might be more complicated than that. if you have a DSL modem, it needs to be in "pass through" or "bridge" mode. that way the router can assign IP addresses as it pleases without conflict. and you need to use an Ethernet cable. that's the only thing that will work.

you may have to delete the old dial up connection, then restart the computer. then set up the new connection, the restart again before trying to connect. if this does not work call your ISP's tech support hotline. good luck.
