I have checked all the fuses and tried swapping them around, but sadly it doesn't appear to be a fuse. Both main beam headlights stopped working simultaneously and previous answers suggest the switch, but it occurred to me that the problem coincided with the recent downpours and huge puddles, so I wondered if it was also possible something might have burnt out?

With my utmost thanks in advance to anyone who takes the trouble to respond

if it wan't your fuses it may also be the relay usualy locaed in the fuse box it is easy to check relays if you have a multimeter if not it is pretty difficult. if you do all you have to look at the relay and it will have a little diagram on the top there shold be two terminals hooked to a coil of wire. All you have to do is flow power through those two terminals and then check continuity in the other two terminals using an ohmmeter. (p.s. some relays have a diode wired into the coil of wire so flow power both ways through the coil) if it isn't the relay you will have to start checking the wiring in the circut for wires that are broken or rubbed through. hope this helps

It is very possible that Water found its way into the Headlight assemblies burning out the bulbs.
Check toi see if you see signs of moisture inside the Lamp assemblies. If so, The bulbs are most likely burnt out, but also means you need to find out how the water got in there and Correct that leak.

Well it is possible that both lights are out, but there is only 1 way to check for sure. You will have to remove the bulb and check the filament with an ohms meter.
You can also remove the bulb, and connect 2 wires to your car battery and just touch the bulb to see if it lights. It don't matter what wire goes where. You can touch ether wire to the end and see if it lights, if you don't have a ohms meter.
