I have 2 - 256 MB RAM slots. I want to add RAM. Can replace these 2 with 2 - 512 MB memory cards ?

Depends on the motherboard. Check with your manufacturer or manual to see what the limits of your computer are. If the max RAM chip size per slot is 256meg then no, if it's 1gig then yes.
