pressing function key and alt together does not work as on my UK laptop to get french characters etc.

answers so fsr no good or not clear enough.Some of the answers would only work with a desk top

Press Alt+1+5+6 (All numbers on the number pad, with Num Lock turned on). The result is this: £

I have a US laptop too, pressing shift and 3 together gets the £ sign, not sure how that works as there is a hash symbol on the key itself.

Easy answer... you can either copy the character from the character map (start/run/charmap enter) or you can adjust the keyboard to have the '4' key show the pound or euro.. but changing the keyboard layout.

In Control Panel, Regional Settings - select UK for your keyboard.

The key will still have a #, but will show a £ when you press it
